Product & Engineering Mentor

What you'll do

  • Help fellows (students in the program) choose a problem to solve, identify potential users, and test an idea.
  • Help them plan a first version they can build and launch within six weeks.
  • Review prototypes, product decisions, and the steps users take in an app. Give feedback fellows can use.
  • Teach fellows to talk with users and use their feedback to decide what to improve.
  • Guide them as they build web or mobile apps with AI coding tools.
  • Help them use error messages and test results to find bugs and understand the code their tools generate.
  • Teach them to use databases, set up user sign-in, connect external services through APIs, and publish their apps.
  • Review technical decisions and teach them how to test that their product works.

What you'll bring

  • A published web or mobile app you built or helped build in a substantial way. Explain the product and technical decisions that shaped it.
  • Examples of using user research or feedback to improve a product.
  • Good judgment about which features to include, how easy they are to use, and what to build first.
  • The ability to explain the benefits and limits of different choices so beginners can make their own decisions.
  • Practical experience with current app development tools, databases, and APIs for external services.
  • The ability to find and explain bugs, assess generated code, and handle user data safely.
  • The ability to use AI coding tools, check the code they produce, and explain how that code works.
  • Power user of either Claude Code or Codex.

Bonus points

  • Currently enrolled at or graduated from a top 20 university (e.g., Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford).

How we work

  • Hold individual mentoring sessions, called office hours, with fellows.
  • Help each fellow work through a problem and choose a clear next action.
  • Keep your schedule up to date with the hours you agreed to offer.
  • Use Lumos channels that staff can see when you communicate with fellows.
  • Be patient, communicate clearly, and use good judgment when working with young people.
  • Answer fellow questions in Lumos Discord channels. Aim to reply within 24 hours.
