College application timeline

All right, buckle up: we're about to speedrun the college application process from late summer through January. It can get wild, but plenty of students have survived it, and you will too.

Start with each college's official deadline and work backward. Do not wait until the last day to submit!

August: Get organized

  • Time to get your act together and make that college list: safety, match, reach. You know the drill.
  • Create a spreadsheet or calendar for application, scholarship, testing, and financial-aid deadlines. Trust us, future you will thank present you.
  • Check the testing policy for every college. If another SAT or ACT would help, give it one last run while you can.
  • Start brainstorming your main personal essay. What makes you weird and wonderful? That's your gold.

September: Begin the writing

  • Start writing that main essay. It might be rough at first, and that's okay. A first draft is supposed to be rough.
  • Hunt for scholarships like your broke future self depends on it, because it does. Record the requirements and dates as you go.
  • Time to ask those teachers for recommendations. Give them the correct deadline and at least a month when possible.
  • Double-check your transcript. Do not let a small error become your villain origin story.

October: Revise and verify

  • FAFSA time. Complete the correct form as soon as it is available for your school year, then check your state and each college for earlier priority dates on the Federal Student Aid deadline guide.
  • Polish that main essay until it shines brighter than your future.
  • Supplemental essays can feel like supplemental stress, but you have got this. Reuse your research, not generic paragraphs.
  • Check in with your recommenders, nicely. Make sure they have the right instructions and deadlines.

November: Submit early applications

  • Early birds, your worms are waiting. Submit those early-action or early-decision applications before their exact deadlines.
  • Regular-decision folks, keep grinding on those essays while you wait.
  • Interviews coming up? Practice your "Why I'm awesome" answers with specific stories instead of a memorized speech.
  • Do not forget to breathe. Sleep, keep up with schoolwork, and maybe eat a vegetable or something.

December: Finish regular applications

  • Submit those regular-decision applications with December deadlines.
  • Check your application portals like they are your crush's Instagram. Look for missing materials and status updates.
  • Final interviews? You are a pro by now. Go dazzle them, then thank the person who met with you.
  • Last call for scholarships and financial-aid requirements. Future you wants that ramen money.

January: Submit and confirm

  • Submit. Everything. Now. Get every remaining application in before its exact deadline.
  • Save confirmation emails and verify that each portal marks your application received.
  • Follow up on missing school documents calmly and early.
  • Pop the sparkling cider. You finished a difficult process, you absolute legend.

Every school's deadlines are different, so double-check every date on the official source. And please do not wait until the last second to submit. Website crashes are the stuff of nightmares.
